What is candidias, Its Types, Symptoms & Treatment?

Candidias is a type of infection caused by the overgrowth of yeast known as ‘Candida’, usually ‘Candida albicans’. There are around 20 species of candida infection found normally in very small amounts inside the human body. But certain medical conditions and health problems can result in widespread of the yeast in the body causing uncomfortable and bad health conditions. Here is detailed info on what is candidias and its types.


Types of candidias:


Oral candidias


Oral candidias also known as ‘oropharyngeal candidiasis’, occurs due to the overgrowth of yeast or candida in the throat or mouth area.


Sign and symptoms

  • Include white patches on the tongue or other areas of the mouth and throat

  • Soreness and problems swallowing

  • White spots inside the mouth and on the tongue

  • Cracking at corners of the mouth where your lips meet

Vaginal yeast infection


Vaginal infection occurs on the genital area of women.


Sign and symptoms

  • Genital itching, burning

  • White discharge from the vagina

  • Soreness and redness in the vaginal area

  • Painful intercourse

Male genitalia (balanitis thrush)


It is the infection in male’s caused due to overgrowth of candida infection in male’s genitals.


Sign and symptoms

  • Swelling, irritation, itchiness and soreness of the head of the penis

  • thick, lumpy discharge under the foreskin

  • Unpleasant odor

  • Include red skin around the head of the penis

  • Difficulty retracting the foreskin (phimosis)

  • Pain while passing urine or during sex

Gastrointestinal candidias


Gastrointestinal candidias occurs when the yeast gets enter and spread into your intestine.


Sign and symptoms

  • Belching, bloating, indigestion, nausea

  • diarrhea, gas, intestinal cramps, vomiting, and gastric ulcers

Invasive candidias:


Also termed as candidemia, it is the infection occurring when the yeast enters your bloodstream.


Sign and symptoms

  • Fever and chills

  • Also affecting other body parts such as heart, brain, eyes, bones and joints.

Candidias of skin and nail


It is the condition which occurs due to the overgrowth and widespread of yeast on the skin and nail areas.


Sign and symptoms

  • Allergy issues like hives, herpes, ringworms, bad breath,

  • Seborrheic dermatitis and contact dermatitis

  • Joint pain and muscles pain

  • Weak immune system

  • loss of sex drive

  • Eczema

  • Sinus

  • Hormonal imbalance

  • Mood disorder

Note: If yeast infects the skin on a baby's bottom area, it causes a diaper rash.

Treatment of candidias infection


Candidias can be treated through some antifungal medicine such as

  • clotrimazole

  • nystatin

  • fluconazole

  • voriconazole

  • amphotericin B

  • echinocandins
