Lovastatin is a drug used in the treatment of hypercholesterolemia to reduce the chances of cardiovascular disease. It helps in lowering the bad cholesterol (LDL), fats and raises the good cholesterol (HDL).

How does it work?

Lovastatin belongs to a class of drugs called the ‘statins’. It is a HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor that works by reducing the production of certain fatty acids. As a result, the blood vessel blockage is slowed down and the risk of chest pain and heart attack is reduced which otherwise would have required surgical procedures to open.

What are the side effects of lovastatin?
